The writing's on the wall....

"What's up with all the preaching?"

Avocado Anonymous is not about preaching. It's not about me telling you how to live your life. The idea behind this website is one of advertising. Or, to be precise, counter-advertising. People are culturally conditioned to be somehow suspicious of anything that goes againts the mainstream values or against the way they lead their lives. And I don't have a problem with that, it's not my or your fault. I'm not on a crusade to change this. It's your call how you live your life.

We all make choices every day. They are based on our judgments, our principles, and so on. But they are also influenced. Influenced by our experience and our environment. If you live a life of an average western world citizen, self-destructive nature of drug-fueled escapism is something you experience around the clock. And the environment you're in is only encouraging this kind of approach to life.

It's not so much about particular products, like this or that brand of cigarettes or this or that brand of booze, but rather about a certain lifestyle that's being pushed down our throats. Our culture embraces, promotes and supports drug use in numerous ways. The choice we're given is between product A and product B. They may differ in packaging and marketing attempts, but they have exactly the same effects and the money goes to the same bank accounts. In case you don't know - people who sell them prey on your insecurities, on your lack of confidence and focus.

The most empowering thing I can think of in terms of how I live my life is choice. But it's not the choice between "options" I am presented with. I choose to live drug free. I'm interested in my health, I'm interested in living my life in a meaningful way, I'm interested in independent life-decision making. Not something you see advertised on tv too often, is it? So I think it's important to advertise. To counter-advertise. To show an alternative.

I don't need drugs to enjoy myself, to interact with people or to go wild at a party. Being sober gives me an upper hand and a confidence boost no drugs could ever deliver. Because it never ends. Because it's free. Because it's there, if you're willing to try. Bottom line is that it may be fun to get drunk and do something silly, but hey if you're after this kind of thing, then it's sure even more fun to do all the goofy stuff when you're sober! Try it.

In a world that's telling you to do this and that every single day and everywhere you go, a voice saying "nah, screw all this!" is likely to go unheard. Well, this one time, I don't care - because my choice is already made. It feels good to be alive.
